(INVITED)Planar microcavities: Materials and processing for light control

Microcavities are a class of optical structures providing versatile approach to engineering light matter interactions. In recent developments in materials processing technologies, particular for organic and hybrid ones, the need high efficiency systems, there has been extensive innovation improvement their design realization leading multitude materials. Among these, closed multi-material microcavities or microresonators based on effect dielectric contrast have attractive low losses, applicability wide spectral range, customizability. High-dielectric distributed Bragg reflectors adapted early highly controlled fabrication strong confinement proved be essential current technologies including lasers emitting diodes. this review, we map evolution from planar one-dimensional inorganic more sophisticated designs incorporating various categories Additionally, provide an overview state-of-the-art limitations structures.
